This class is a great introduction to baroque-style improvisation. Jurgen Essl takes the toccata form of Pachelebel as a model, explaining meanwhile how these compositions were interpreted not only as finished pieces but as models for further composition. JE also shows, in a straightforward manner, how to interpret the model: taking chordal elements, adding figurations, scales, simple modulations etc., which are all demonstrated. The students' attempts are then referred back to the original composition for comparison, and solutions to problems are sought in the original text.

The treatment of printed music as models is a wonderful concept, and in sharp contrast to modern times, where compositions are treated as intellectual property (of the composer) and not to be touched!
